Tropical Storm Melissa is predicted to escalate to a rare Category 5 hurricane as it turns toward the Caribbean island, causing deadly rapid inundation and mudslides.

The cyclone, which registered winds of up to 195 km/h as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is presently veering northwest in the Caribbean Sea and is anticipated to reach land by midweek, according to meteorological authorities.

Alerts of electricity outages and disruption to utilities have been announced as the hurricane brings up to thirty inches of precipitation and sea level surges as high as 13ft above typical tides. "Seek shelter now," inhabitants have been urged.

This hurricane is the 13th hurricane in this year's Atlantic hurricane season, which typically ends in November.

Most Intense Hurricane Risk

A category five cyclone is the most powerful category, with sustained winds of at least 157mph.

Alerts are also ongoing for regions of the neighboring country including the primary urban center, the Dominican Republic and Cuba's eastern region, where the hurricane is expected to bring comparable impacts by the middle portion of the coming week.

Landslides currently triggered by the hurricane have resulted in two fatalities in Haiti, according to emergency services.

Projected Trajectory

Melissa is projected to move across the island nation by Wednesday before passing across the Caribbean archipelago and out into the open ocean.

By the point it arrives at the Caribbean nation, it is forecast to have weakened to a Category 3 storm.
